Chateau des Charmes: a wedding venue guide

Chateau des Charmes is a family winery in St. Davids, just outside Niagara-on-the-Lake, set against the St. David’s Bench vineyard with the Niagara Escarpment behind it. For weddings it works differently from most Niagara wineries, and the difference is worth understanding before touring.

The reception space is a tent. Not a marquee erected for the season, but a permanent curved-roof structure with proper hard-scape flooring, seating up to 250 guests at rounds of eight with room for a head table. That means the venue handles a large guest list outdoors without the compromises that come with a rented tent on grass — and it means the property’s capacity is considerably higher than the winery buildings would suggest.

The second thing: weddings here are catered by Vintage Hotels, through the Queen’s Landing kitchen. So the setting is a working family winery and the food and service come from a hotel group.

The spaces

The great lawn is the outdoor ceremony space, overlooking the estate vineyards and sitting adjacent to the reception tent. The short walk between the two is the whole logic of the day here — guests move from ceremony to reception without leaving the lawn.

The Vineyard Courtyard is the reception space: the curved-roof tent with hard-scape flooring, accommodating up to 250 seated. The escarpment and the vineyard are the backdrop.

The Foyer and the Estate Room are the indoor ceremony options, which matters because the outdoor ceremony has an indoor alternative on the same property.

There is also an octagonal room with an oak wine bar, a brass chandelier and bay windows onto the St. David’s Bench vineyard, used for cocktail hour, small ceremonies and late-night service.

Published figures for the smaller indoor rooms vary between sources. For current capacities and which combination suits a particular guest count, contact the winery or the Vintage Hotels wedding team directly.

Planning notes

Catering comes from Queen’s Landing. Chateau des Charmes is one of Vintage Hotels’ partner wineries, so the kitchen behind the wedding is the same one behind Queen’s Landing in Old Town. Couples who like the idea of a vineyard setting with hotel-standard catering have two options in the group — this and The Hare Wine Co. — and they suit very different guest counts.

The tent is the reason to book, and it is seasonal in feel. A permanent structure removes the weather anxiety of a marquee, but it is still an outdoor reception. Confirm which months the Vineyard Courtyard operates in and what the heating arrangements are for shoulder-season dates.

Guest ceiling is 250 in the tent. That is high for a Niagara winery and it is the main practical reason to look here rather than at the smaller estates.

Accommodation is off site. St. Davids sits minutes from Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake and from Queenston, so the Vintage Hotels properties are close and a room block is straightforward. Transport still needs arranging.

It is a working family winery, producing under its own label with a long history in the region. Ask what winery operations are running on your date and how they intersect with the day.

Who it suits

Chateau des Charmes suits a couple who wants a large vineyard wedding — up to 250 — with a permanent covered reception space and catering from a hotel group. The combination of scale, a real vineyard setting and an indoor ceremony alternative is unusual, and it makes the venue a practical choice as well as a scenic one.

For a smaller guest list, an indoor reception, or accommodation on the property, another Niagara winery will be the better fit.

Among the Niagara wineries, the split is fairly clean by size: Chateau des Charmes and Ravine Vineyard handle up to 250, The Hare Wine Co. tops out around 130, and Queenston Mile is smaller and less formal again.
