The drive in tells you everything. A canopy of centuries-old live oaks, Spanish moss hanging from the branches, the main house visible at the end of the approach. Lowndes Grove is a very particular kind of Southern elegance — inherited, not designed — and it carries that quality through every part of the property.
The estate
Lowndes Grove was built in 1786 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property spans 14 acres of Ashley River waterfront in Charleston, South Carolina. The main house features a three-story spiral staircase, period furnishings throughout, and sunlit terraces built of bluestone, brick, and oyster tabby. A private bridal suite on the second floor is available from 9am on the wedding day.
The grounds are defined by the live oak trees — the allée that runs from the property entrance to the main house is one of the most beautiful natural settings in Charleston. The moss moves through the canopy, the light filters through in shifting patterns, and the corridor has a natural frame that makes it extraordinary for processionals and portraits alike.
Event spaces
The Grand Lawn faces the Ashley River and is the primary ceremony and outdoor reception space, accommodating up to 300 guests. The river provides the backdrop to the west, and in the late afternoon the light comes across the water low and warm. Evening ceremonies on the Grand Lawn during summer and fall catch some of the finest light Charleston has to offer.
The Carriage House is a flexible indoor space on the grounds, ideal for cocktail hours and intimate receptions, with views of the property’s landscaped gardens.
River House at Lowndes Grove is a private, gated space on the property, nestled between the live oaks and the Ashley River and accommodating up to 100 guests. It can be added as a getting-ready or gathering space to complement the main event.
What makes Lowndes Grove distinctive
The combination of genuine historical depth and riverfront landscape is rare. The property has been named Charleston’s Best Wedding Venue multiple years running and has been featured in BRIDES, Martha Stewart Weddings, and The Knot. Exclusive use of the venue and grounds is included for four-hour events, with flexible vendor setup hours and breakdown time included.
Charleston has a quality of place that is difficult to manufacture — it comes from the relationship between a location and its history. Lowndes Grove carries that quality throughout.
